I'm running for Austin City Council, District 1, because I believe Austin should be a city that's affordable, healthy, and safe for everyone. Our City Council must be accountable to the people it serves.
I'm running for every hardworking Austinite who's ever gone to City Hall to speak up for their community—only to feel ignored or dismissed. It's time for real representation and action.
For too long, District 1's leadership has failed to truly engage with the community. The current representative has been absent, unresponsive, and too often sides with developers over residents. District 1 deserves a leader who shows up, listens, and fights for the people who live here.
I'm Steven Brown, and I'm ready to bring your voice back to City Hall.
While hardworking District 1 residents take time off work to speak at City Council meetings, staff have reportedly been playing "constituent bingo" — mocking the very people they're supposed to serve.
This isn't just disrespectful. It's a symptom of a deeper problem: leadership that doesn't listen.
Read the Full StoryI was born and raised right here in East Austin—a lifelong resident of District 1. I attended Norman Elementary, Blanton Elementary, Maplewood Elementary, Kealing Middle School, and LBJ High School, and graduated from Austin Community College, Huston-Tillotson University, and Texas State University, where I'm currently pursuing my Master of Science degree.
I was raised by my loving parents and great-grandmother, and I've raised my two sons here as well. I know firsthand the challenges families face in Austin today—whether it's rising costs, access to affordable housing, or feeling unheard by local government.
For over 20 years, I've served Austin as a trusted healthcare professional, working with people from all walks of life to solve complex problems. That experience taught me the power of teamwork, empathy, and accountability—values I plan to bring to the Austin City Council.
I'm no stranger to standing up to City Hall when it's necessary—but I also know how to work across differences to get things done.
In 2012, I initiated a lawsuit that led to changes in the City of Austin's hiring practices within the Austin Fire Department, ensuring fairness and accountability in city employment.
As a member of the Givens Park Work Group, I helped bring long-overdue improvements and upgrades to one of East Austin's most historic parks.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked tirelessly to connect District 1 residents with public health resources, ensuring access to testing, vaccines, and reliable information when our community needed it most.
I've also been a strong advocate for racial and historical justice, helping to raise awareness about the desegregation of Barton Springs through the work and legacy of Joan Means.
Most recently, I spoke out against the HOME Initiative and Proposition Q, standing firmly with the community in opposition to policies that threaten affordability and neighborhood integrity.
A commitment to make the people in the district a priority. We're all tired of our council members not listening to us and having a consistent engaging dialogue. That changes with me.
District 1 has experienced an unprecedented wave of development and construction, and while growth can be positive, it must happen responsibly and with community input. Rapid development has reduced our green spaces, increased traffic and heat zones, and changed the character of our neighborhoods—often without real consultation with the people who live here.
I believe District 1 has a right to have a say in how our community grows and evolves. We must protect our parks, trees, and green spaces, expand access to shade, clean air, and safe outdoor areas, and ensure that future development respects the environmental and cultural fabric of East Austin.
Protecting our environment isn't just about conservation—it's about public health, quality of life, and equity. Every Austinite deserves to live in a community that's safe, green, and livable.
Austin has become one of the least affordable cities in Texas, and District 1 families are feeling the squeeze. My priorities are clear:
Ensure working families can live and thrive in the neighborhoods they helped build.
Hold City Council and city departments responsible for transparent, effective governance.
End wasteful spending and make local government work for its citizens—not against them.
Protect green spaces, address urban heat, and make sure growth benefits the people—not just developers.
Local government should be about solutions, not politics.
If city policies aren't improving people's lives, they need to change. Austin deserves leadership that listens, learns, and acts.
Your contribution helps us fight for affordability, accountability, and real representation in District 1.
It's time for leadership that represents you—not developers, special interests, or party politics.
I'm running to make sure that every hardworking Austinite has a seat at the table.
Let's bring integrity, affordability, accountability, and environmental justice back to District 1.
Vote Steven Brown for Austin City Council, District 1.
